Almost none of them have ever added it up across a full year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you do, the number stops being an annoyance and starts looking like a second mortgage payment you&#8217;re handing to a company you don&#8217;t control. The guest doesn&#8217;t see &#8220;your price&#8221; and &#8220;Airbnb&#8217;s price.&#8221; They see one total. So when Airbnb pads your $200 night into $230 at checkout,\u00a0<em>you&#8217;re<\/em>\u00a0the listing that suddenly looks expensive next to the place down the street \u2014 and you never touched that extra $30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add both sides together and, depending on your market and fee model,&nbsp;<strong>15\u201318% of the total value of every booking disappears into the platform.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-now-multiply-it-by-a-year\" class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Now multiply it by a year<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A single booking losing 15% doesn&#8217;t feel like much. A year of them does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A host grossing&nbsp;<strong>$40,000\/year<\/strong>&nbsp;loses roughly&nbsp;<strong>$6,000\u2013$7,000<\/strong>&nbsp;to fees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A host grossing&nbsp;<strong>$70,000\/year<\/strong>&nbsp;loses around&nbsp;<strong>$10,000\u2013$11,000.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>That&#8217;s not a typo, and it&#8217;s not an edge case \u2014 it&#8217;s the normal cost of doing business on someone else&#8217;s platform. Year after year. It doesn&#8217;t build you anything. It doesn&#8217;t compound in your favor.
